The Vbeam produces an intense but gentle burst of light that selectively eliminates the blood vessels and redness within the treated area, without damaging the surrounding tissue.
While one treatment will produce some improvement, two to four treatments will probably be needed to achieve the best results. Treatments are usually performed four weeks apart.
You and your doctor will wear safety glasses to protect your eyes during the procedure. The doctor will use a small handpiece that touches your skin to deliver the light. You may feel a light spray of coolant on your skin before each laser pulse. The feeling has been described as the snap of a rubber band or as a slight stinging sensation. Topical numbing gels or creams are generally not needed as most treatments are well-tolerated without them. Afterwards, the area may be slightly pink or feel warm, like mild sunburn.
Improvement can usually be seen immediately, although more than one treatment is usually required for maximal improvement.
Immediately after a treatment, the area is usually slightly pink or red, and possibly slightly swollen. More rare side effects include bruising or blisters. Swelling usually resolves within 1 – 5 days while bruising or redness may last 7-14 days. Crusting can rarely develop when port wine stains (red birthmarks) are treated. As with many lasers, color changes (darkening or lightening of skin color) can occasionally occur in darker skin types or in patients with a tan.
In general, avoid sun exposure for 4 to 6 weeks before treatment and again after treatment until your physician allows it. Care should be taken in the first few days following treatments to avoid scrubbing or rinsing the treated areas with abrasive skin cleaners. Consult your doctor for specific precautions.
