Unsightly leg veins can be a problem for millions of men and women. In fact, up to 60% of the adult population suffers from varicose and spider veins.
The cause of spider veins is not completely known, although they appear to run in families and can affect both men and women.
Varicose Veins are enlarged vessels that have widened as a result of weakness in the vein wall, which stretches and bulges. Spider veins are the small superficial purple or red veins stretching like a web under the skin commonly occurring on the legs, but are also found on the face and other areas of the body.
Varicose veins usually require surgery or other invasive procedures to treat. Spider veins can be treated by either injections (sclerotherapy) or by a laser. Both are effective, and Dr. Rodgers will discuss the advantages and disadvantages of each at your consultation.
During sclerotherapy, concentrated salt water is injected through a tiny needle into each vein. This causes irritation to the lining of the blood vessel which ultimately results in improvement. During the laser treatments, the laser is passed over the vein and light energy is used to microscopically damage the unwanted blood vessels, resulting in improvement.
Both sclerotherapy and laser treatments can be slightly uncomfortable, with the sensation being described as a pinch, stinging, or the snap of a rubber band. Any discomfort is temporary.
Spider veins typically appear red and swollen after treatments. Bruising or discoloration can occur in some patients. Support hose should be worn after the procedure to maximize results. Other side effects will be discussed by Dr. Rodgers at your consultation.
Spider veins often need multiple treatments, requiring a few months before the effect is complete. Even small vessels often require time to heal.
Even after treatment, veins may reappear. It also may seem that a previously treated vessel has recurred when, in fact, it is usually a new spider vein in the same area.
