IPL is short for Intense Pulsed Light, a treatment that can correct a variety of benign skin conditions. It is not a true laser but rather a broad spectrum of light that can be used to simultaneously treat several conditions simultaneously.
Goggles will be used to protect your eyes from the bright light. A cold gel is then applied to the area to be treated. The IPL handpiece is gently applied to your skin and pulses of light are applied. You may feel a slight sting, like the snapping of a small rubber band against your skin. Each treatment takes about 20 minutes.
Treatments are generally administered in a series of 4 to 6 sessions that provide excellent long-term results. By dividing the full program into several treatments, the procedure provides gradual improvement with very low risk of adverse reactions.
Most patients experience slight redness and possibly minor swelling of the treated areas for a few hours. Dark spots and freckles usually turn darker before they begin to fade. Other rare side effects can occur and these will be discussed by Dr.Rodgers at your consultation.
