Pre-Op Instructions

ONE to TWO WEEKS BEFORE SURGERY

Please stop ASPIRIN two (2) weeks prior to surgery and other pain medicines (other than Tylenol) one week prior to surgery (such as ADVIL, MOTRIN, ALEVE, etc).  If you are taking aspirin or one of the listed medications daily because your doctor prescribed it, please continue it unless we contact you and instruct you to stop.  These medicines can cause an increase in bleeding during surgery and should be avoided for the week or two prior to surgery.  Please take Tylenol for pain relief during this time if you are otherwise normally able to take Tylenol, as it will not “thin” your blood.

ANTIOBIOTICS

If you were prescribed pre-op antibiotics, please start them as directed.  If you believe you need pre-op antibiotics and were not prescribed them, please call us as (972) 704-2400.

THE DAY OF SURGERY

  • If at all possible, please bring someone with you.
  • Please arrive a few minute before your scheduled appointment time.  We strive to stay on schedule, but ask that you be patient if we are running late.  Surgical procedures can sometimes take longer than expected.
  • Wear comfortable clothing.
  • Your excision will last approximately 1 to 1 ½ hours.  (Including pre-op preparation and post-op instructions).
  • Eat normally the day of your surgery (you do not need to fast).
  • Take your regular medications unless directed otherwise.
  • Expect to have a large pressure dressing placed over your surgical site.  This should remain in place 24-48 hours.  If your surgery involves the scalp you may have a dressing wrapped around your entire head which should remain in place for 24 hours.
  • Please take the remainder of the day off work to avoid post-operative bleeding.

FOLLOWING YOUR PROCEDURE

  • Avoid activities that may place strain on your incision until your return visit (usually in 10 to 14 days).  This is to help prevent bleeding, pulling of sutures, and to minimize scarring.  If you are in doubt as to what is acceptable, please discuss this with your doctor before you leave.
  • Use an ice pack and take Tylenol to help prevent swelling and discomfort.
  • You will be given written instructions on how to care for your incision as well as after-hours contact phone numbers.

We hope that this information helps you to be well prepared for your surgery.  We look forward to seeing you in the near future.
