Botox®

Botox

Discovered in the 1950s, Botox® has been used therapeutically for years to treat a variety of medical conditions.

What is Botox®?

Botox® (Botulinum Toxin Type A) is a substance that temporarily blocks the signal from nerves to muscles.  Medically, Botox® may be used to block the signal from nerves to sweat glands in patients with excessive sweating of the hands or underarms.  Cosmetically, it is used to soften lines and wrinkles in the face.

What will happen during the procedure?

During treatment, very low doses of Botox® are administered with a few tiny injections into the muscles.  No anesthesia is required.  The entire procedure takes only a matter of minutes.

What can I expect to happen after it is injected?

The effects of Botox® are not immediate; it usually takes between 2 to 5 days in order for the muscle to become paralyzed.  Slight redness around the injection site may last for a few hours.  Occasionally a bruise will form at the injection site, which is temporary.  Some people experience a headache, but Botox® can actually be used to migraine headaches.  Other less common side effects will be discussed at your consultation.

How soon will I see a difference?

You can expect to see results within days after your treatment.  The appearance of the area may continue to improve for up to a week.

How long will it last?

Effects generally last for approximately 3 to 5 months, but vary from patient to patient. When used for excessive sweating, effects range from 2 to 12 months, depending, in part, on the locations injected.

Is Botox® covered by my insurance?

When used for excessive sweating (called hyperhidrosis), it is occasionally partially covered by many insurance plans.  Prior authorization before the procedure is usually required to ensure it is a covered procedure.  Further details will be provided at your consultation.
