These products, also know as “dermal fillers” are injected into the skin to replace lost fullness, restore youthful contours in the face, and to smooth away wrinkles and folds.
Restylane®, Perlane®, Juvéderm®, and Juvéderm® UIltra Plus are all composed of hyaluronic acid, a naturally-occurring substance in your skin. Dr. Rodgers will decide which product is right for you based on an evaluation.
Dermal fillers are injected into the skin, adding volume and smoothing wrinkles. It is used mainly in wrinkles or lines that are not causes by muscle movement. The most common areas are the lips, nasolabial folds (lines between the nose and the corners of the mouth), and other facial lines and wrinkles. Botox® relaxes the muscles that cause frown lines between the eyebrows, the forehead, crow’s feet, and other areas.
Avoid using aspirin, non-steroidal anti-inflammatory medications (Advil, Motrin, Aleve, etc.), St. John’s Wort, or high doses of vitamin E supplements prior to treatment. These may increase bruising or bleeding at the injection site. Also, if you’ve previously suffered from facial cold sores, discuss this with Dr. Rodgers as he may prescribe a medication to minimize recurrence.
Most products last an average of 6 months, but can last longer, up to a year in some patients.
The areas to be treated are numbed with either a topical numbing cream or with dental blocks to numb large areas. The dermal fillers are then injected directly in small amounts under the skin using an ultrafine needle. Some patients may experience slight discomfort.
You may experience temporary injection site redness, swelling, pain/tenderness, firmness, lumps/bumps, or bruising. Exposure of the treated area to excessive sun and extreme cold should be minimized until swelling and redness have disappeared.
